Very shallow bed. Below about 2″ the risk is channeling, not sticking — and hulls don't fix that. A narrower tun or a deeper bed helps more here.
Deep bed. Past ~10″ a gummy bed can stall no matter how many hulls you add. Widen the vessel or split the mash before dosing this high.
Flow, not filtration. On a recirculating malt pipe the failure is starved flow — overflow, lost efficiency, even a scorched element. This baseline is cheap insurance; tighten crush and steady your flow and you can trim or skip it.

The coefficients are calibrated to real practice, not lab data, so treat the number as a starting point: begin toward the higher end if you're unsure, watch your first runoff, and adjust next time.
